Are You Ready to be the Breadwinner? Jo Ann Byrne, owner and stylist at Salon joVon in Brecksveille, OH, attended “Step Up! – Fast Track to Wealth” in December of 2008. Her experience was profound: nothing short of astonishing, breathtaking and extraordinary! As a vision of what’s possible for those who have the willingness and readiness to believe, Jo Ann has agreed to share her story here. Jo Ann never thought of herself as “the breadwinner” in the family, since her husband brought in a decent yearly salary from General Motors. But what happens if the breadwinner no longer brings in an income? In these troubled economic times, anything is possible. To address this question, Michael Cole and Carolyn O’Connor asked the group to fill out their budget trackers WITHOUT the income of their spouses. “I had a heavy conversation with Michael,” recalls Jo Ann, “and he assured me that we could survive the rough road ahead, although I was consumed by the negative amount of money - $3,000 a month – that we would have without my husband’s income.” Jo Ann could not fathom the reality of becoming the breadwinner of her household. Yet the numbers that she tracked revealed potential. Sure enough, Jo Ann’s husband was laid off, but thanks to Step Up, Jo Ann knew how to survive. “In that month I was able to increase my income enough to cover us,” reports Jo Ann. “My last paycheck was $1,500 and I only worked 23 hours behind the chair!” Jo Ann feels confident that she can compensate for the lost income. In the last two months, two paychecks in a row exceeded what she’d ever made in the past - going from $800- $900 to $1,900! The biggest “AHA” for Jo Ann was learning to use the Jump Journal as a tool to look at the week in advance to PLAN. “We were always taught to look backwards at past month; it was so amazing to shift to looking ahead, to looking toward the front of the ship rather than off the back end!” Within the first two weeks after attending Step Up, Jo Ann’s retail jumped. Pre-planning pushed all her additionals as she focused on what she could offer outside of what was prebooked. She worked with her associate to map out plans for each of them. They had a record service sale day immediately. “What a relief to feel like I had a plan,” she recalls, “instead of always guessing!” Her retail sales have also risen to 15%—a new, first-time height. Now when Jo Ann uses her Jump Journal, she looks at the planner to see what is possible. She and her staff color-code blank spots according to whether they can add services or sell retail. If there is a cancellation, she has time to move others up and open up new appointments. “Although it’s great to look back and see what you did,” Jo Ann says, “to know what you can do ahead of time—what the potential is —is unreal. It’s a new feeling of total control!” With the practice and effort that she has applied, Jo Ann is confident that she can make most of the money she needs to act as the breadwinner. She and her staff now meet on the first Monday of each month to set up budgets and goals and re-create what she did at Step Up. Most of her staff is committed to what she and her colleague Mary Branzina brought home from Step Up; once they saw the change they became willing to do it too. The new mindset of pre-booking and planning each week in advance has brought them results far exceeding their expectations. Jo Ann’s week’s service total was $2,297; she had never before come close to $2,000. She worked 27 hours and her RTS hit a new high of 17%. Her weekly retail total is more than she used to make in the entire month! Thank you to Jo Ann for sharing her story for this article. “I would be honored to be a part of what can be!” she said, “and thank YOU so much for pointing out what was already there, I just could not see it. I am forever grateful!” What will do you do if your breadwinner loses income? DO YOU HAVE A PLAN? Are you willing and ready to Step Up as breadwinner? |
